If your router is not old and you think there is no need to buy a new router, you can make some other changes to boost Wi-Fi signals. There are a few workarounds to fix the slow internet by improving the WiFi’s performance.
In this article, I am listing a few ways for improving Wi-Fi connectivity. You can follow these ways to boost your WiFi signals and get better connectivity.
Ways to Boost Your Wi-Fi Signal
1. Change Location and Find the Perfect Spot for Your Router
Location is an important thing most people ignore. It is advisable to put the router at the center of your home. You also need to put it in the open, free of any obstructions. Our device’s distance from the router is also an important factor. If you are in the line of sight of the router, you will get the best signals. If your router has external antennas, orient them vertically. It will bump up coverage.
Finding the perfect location is important and you should make sure that all corners of your home come within the range of your router. Otherwise, there will be dead spots.
2. Keep it away from Home appliances and metal Objects
You should also consider placing your router at a distance from other electronic devices. Microwaves, cordless telephones, fluorescent lights, or other appliances may interfere with your Wi-Fi signal. To reduce interference, place your router away from household appliances. You should also avoid placing your router near metal objects. It is because metal objects can absorb signal strength.
3. Update Your Router Firmware
Routers also work on software that is called Firmware. Manufacturers also push update from time to time to improve the performance and fix known bugs or security issues. So, you should always keep an eye on the latest updates and keep your router at the latest firmware. If you are not sure how to open it, check the router’s manual or contact your ISP.
4. Use Wireless Range Extenders
If your home area is large, you should consider buying a wireless range extender. It is a good way to boost your Wifi signals when there are lots of walls weakening your WiFi signal. Wireless range extenders help in increasing the range of wireless networks. If your home is large and poor signals are due to the large area, a Wireless range extender is the best option. It helps in increasing the range to ensure better network coverage across the home.
Here are a few good Wireless extenders you can buy.
- NETGEAR EX3700 Wi-Fi Range Extender (AC750)
- NETGEAR EX6200 Wi-Fi Range Extender (AC1200)
- Linksys RE6500 Wi-Fi Range Extender (AC1200)

5. Find the Right Wireless Channel and Frequency
The most common problem with WiFi is the interference of your signals by the routers of your neighbors. If you both are using the same WiFi channel, you will surely face an issue. Most of the routers work on the 2.4GHz frequency that has 13 channels. People generally do not change the channels of the router and use the default one. You can change it via the admin panel of your router.
Overlapping signals cause re-transmission of data and sometimes you may face a connection drop. To resolve this, use tools like Network Analyzer Lite or WiFi Analyzer and find the perfect channel in your house. The go to admin panel of the router to adjust the settings
Alternatively, you can buy a modern router that works on 5GHz frequency. Not many people are using this as it costs a bit high. So, you are less likely to face interference problems.
6. Control Bandwidth-Hogging Applications
If you have multiple people using the wifi at home, you need to control the apps using the network. video chats, playing online games, torrents, and online video or song streaming apps take too much bandwidth and make the connection slow. So, you need to use Quality of Service or QoS and prioritize certain applications over others. If you do this, your important apps will get the bandwidth based on priority. QoS option can be found in the router’s admin panel. Some routers may even make it easier by offering multimedia or gaming settings. So, you can prioritize things to ensure a better experience.
7. Router Antennas
Antennas can also be the reason for your weak WiFi signals. If you do not want to change the router, you can consider replacing your existing router’s antenna. Most routers come with a detachable antenna. So, you can easily replace it. While buying the new, go for an omnidirectional antenna. If your router has an internal antenna, you can add an external one to boost the WiFi signal. Also, point your external antenna in the direction of your weak spot. It is because external antennas are generally considered to be stronger.
Now you know what are thing things you can do to ensure proper Wi-Fi connectivity. You can all these ways to ensure better connectivity and signals across your home. Finding the proper location of the router and use of Wireless range Extenders are the two most important things to follow. Distance is the most obvious problem people face. If your router is old, then you can think of buying a new modern route with better Wi-Fi coverage and better speed. A Dual-band router is the best thing to go with. Do not forget to check its range and other details before selecting one.
